I saw a TV show on chaos and fractals and how all the tree-like structures in nature can be represented by a simple equation. It would account for all the branching that we see in nature. Similar to:

Thanks roz! Indeed, why do we learn better using branches and roots? We do we model by using these design techniques? Could it be related to the nature of our neurons? Are neurons "optimized" to prefer structures that are similar to themselves? Is it a matter of training? Of cognitive economy? I hope to find the answers, some day!

It would seem to me that another possibility is that the process of natural selection means that effective and efficient structures are most likely to have emerged over time and so it is not surprising that when we consciously seek to solve similar problems, we often arrive at analogous solutions.
